A snap is less likely to be noticed than a pan. Reactions to photography in casinos varies widely. Thanks to these dealers at Cosmo for not having a freak-out.

This is a biggy. Use your Taser on them immediately. Try resting your camera on something to keep it steady, or tuck your elbow in and use your arm like a tripod.

This is the one rule that makes sense on the part of casinos. Tripod legs are a danger to other guests who are often either drunk or distracted by all the shiny things in a casino.

Not that anyone would do that kind of thing in a Las Vegas hotel room, of course. Think through where you need to be for your photo so you get it right the first time.

These strategies are the key to successful photography on a casino floor. Hit your spot and start snapping.

Do not acknowledge the person. Most casinos use security concerns as an excuse to ban photography, but that reason is outdated and misguided.

These tips might work for cage photos, too, but why tempt fate? One of our favorite rules is never obey rules.

Four Queens, downtown, actually has signs encouraging photography. Security guards tend to get overzealous, and tensions can escalate quickly.

If asked, explain your photos are for personal use, not commercial. Never offer to delete photos you have already taken, and do not let security review your photos, as they do not have the legal right to do so.

Ask to speak to a manager, and sort it out with someone higher on the food chain. You got a great picture of that dancer! I was taking a picture of the architecture that surrounds the cage at the Main Street Casino and was promptly told no photos of the cage.

I never even thought about it. But no one said anything when I photographed the rest of the casino. Good advice, for sure. This just happened to us at Palace Station.

We were taking a picture of a completely empty bar. Pretty hard to understand the objections to that.

I asked if I could take picture of the buffet sign and got an emphatic NO!!! The security guard instructed us to delete the pictures but happily did not actually stand there and watch us do so.

I had a tech next to me and I take out my phone to take a picture of it, which she craps on. Not letting this situation go to waste, like a pro I stand up and pretend to text my friends and quickly grab a picture… https: I took out my phone and took a picture of the screen.

The slot screen was copyrighted was his answer. I already had my picture. Of course I took that picture. Barney was on me again.

He revisits the city's checkered history of moguls, mobsters, and entertainers, reveals the real stories of well-known power brokers like Steve Wynn and legends like Howard Hughes and Bugsy Siegel, and offers a fascinating portrait of the life, death, and fantastic rebirth of the Las Vegas Strip.

Earley also documents the gripping tale of the entrepreneurs behind the rise and fall and rise again of one of the largest gaming corporations in the nation, Circus Circus -- to which he was given unique access.

In his trademark you-are-there style, he takes us behind the scenes to meet the blackjack dealers and hookers, the heavy hitters and bit players, the security officers, cabbies, and showgirls who are caught up in the mercurial pace that pulses at the heart of this astounding city.

The book is really two books in one. The first part deals with how Las Vegas came to be, the establishment of the first casinos, a small description of how Jay Sarno established Caesars Palace and Circus Circus nothing like the more detailed story of "Grandissimo" , background on how Steve Wynn established himself in Las Vegas, and how Circus Circus established itself as the largest casino company on the strip.

Its really the last part that dominates the book, describing how Circus Circus turned itself around after Sarno had to let it go up to getting the Luxor off the ground and the building of Mandalay Bay.

The background on all the owners and managers is far from superficial and was very interesting, but if you are looking for multichapter biographies you will be disappointed; wars between owners are investigated and presented from both sides, but you won't find psyche analyses.

The stories of the casino employees is great in getting to see how things work at a casino and the type of culture that exists.

The stories about the gamblers and the prostitute did not fit in well and would have been better in a book just about Las Vegas stories prostitute finds old customer who falls in love with her and helps her get out of business, prostitute finds true love, old customer gets mad and dumps her, true love dumps her once he finds out she was prostitute, and then old customer takes her back and gets her out of Las Vegas.

Also throughout the book are interspersed quick page stories from people who work at casinos or are customers, ones to just give you an idea how cut throat Las Vegas can be.

Overall it's a really nice read if you want to learn more about how Vegas came to be. I dropped one star from the rating simply because of incorporation of the individual stories in some cases took away from the casino stories and history.

Las Vegas has certainly changed in the past 20 years. Casinos have become big business, and their owners are now Fortune companies with Wall Street ties rather than the shady characters from Cleveland.

Pete Earley attempts to contrast the old and new Vegas, and finds many differences and some surprising similarities.

The action in the executive suites is just as cut-throat now as it ever was, although the casino business is quite different.

We get to meet a sampling of casino executives and lower management, as well as a few dealers and even some of the denizens of the gambling floors and cocktail lounges.

Some of the stories are heartbreaking, some slightly vulgar, but in total they present a good overview of how a super-casino functions.

He makes the case that the newer casinos are very different, and rely more on entertainment and lodging for profits than the older casinos did.

With that comes a new focus on quality of foot and beverages, better accommodations, higher standards of service, and blockbuster entertainment.

Throughout the book, the author constantly contrasts the requirements of the new Vegas with the traditional casinos of the 's and 70's.

They left me alone. I have maybe a thousand of pictures of jackpots since then. I have never been hassled in any casino, take lots of pictures and video with my cell phone and other surveillance equipment.

You seem pretty fucking shady and full of yourself. You seem pretty ignorant of the way successful people live their lives.

I have a portable drive full of pictures from the years when I gambled. You are also ignorant of the various types of surveillance people are under.

Commercial, military, intelligence… Been making a very, very good living for nearly 40 years and still going strong. Do I get a special internet cookie, too?

So much for keeping quiet, eh? Practice what you preach, Grandpa. Had my cell phone on by accident https: The casinos have for the most part given up on the no photos policy from what i have seen.

Too hard to enforce now with cell phones. Also, I think regularly featuring Valeria will help drive plenty of eyeballs to your blog.

I have never had a problem taking pictures in the casinos in Vegas but have had the security watch and then double check that we deleted one here in Vancouver.

Forcing people to not take pictures is impossible today. Your email address will not be published. Las Vegas has certainly changed in the past 20 years.

Throughout the book, the author constantly contrasts the requirements of the new Vegas with the traditional casinos of the 's and 70's.

We see the tool the casino takes on its workers, its gamblers, and the others who are a part of the tawdry casino business.

The environment is cut-throat, especially in the executive suites where the ultimate high-stakes gambling is underway.

The story is not told in chronological order, but frequently jumps back in time between old and new Vegas. Some of the tales seem a little cliched, and I would love to read just one Las Vegas book that doesn't mention "Casino" and Tony Spilatro.

The book was easy to read, and captured and held my interest throughout. I'd recommend it to anyone with an interest in the business of gaming.

One person found this helpful. Mass Market Paperback Verified Purchase. The first half of the book deals with the history of the gaming industry in Las Vegas.

The description of the early "grind joints" sets the stage for contrasting the "Super Casinos" of the s.

The second half of the book deals with a behind-the-scenes look at the Luxor from the perspective of numerous characters- corporate management, the general manager, a gaming shift supervisor, a security chief, and a cabaret dancer.

Having formerly worked as a securities analyst, the Wall Street angles throughout the book were of interest. Earley does a great job of tracking the industry's access to financing.

One also better appreciates the factors which drive gaming stocks as evidenced by the volatile stock price of Circus Circus now Mandalay Bay Resort Group.

Overall I found Earley's book informative and enjoyable, he is a hardened journalist who is extremely thorough and leaves himself out of the plot.

This book had its flaws yet it was a somewhat enjoyable taste of Vegas. It stops before the Wynn was built so it feels a bit dated in some of its stories.

It has a tendency to jump back and forth, up and down and left and right in the stories it tells, so sometimes it's easy to get mixed up in which timeline of Vegas history you are in.

Worth a read, just keep in mind it's often more about the people and their stories than the city itself. See all 73 reviews.
